Alto Wine Estate proudly marks 100 years of exceptional winemaking with a festive autumn lunch and wine tasting event. Afribeing was invited to join this monumental celebration.
The majestic drive into Alto Estate welcomed us, as jazz music floated through the warm autumn breeze. We enjoyed a sparkling glass of Alto MCC, the golden bottle glistening in the midday sun, setting the tone for this elegant occasion.
On the deck, overlooking the lush lawns and vineyards, we savoured light canapés featuring delicate quince, smoked trout, and aubergine rolls with cheese and rocket.
Alto Wine Estate, perched on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, symbolizes both elevation and a pursuit of excellence. The estate’s unique location contributes to its exceptional wines, with ocean breezes slowing fruit ripening and enhancing flavor. Generations of expertise have matched the best grape varieties with the estate’s ideal soils, making it famous for producing iconic wines in the renowned ‘Golden Triangle’ region.
During the celebration, we heard from Schalk van der Westhuizen, one of only five winemakers in Alto’s century-long history. We then ventured into the cellar, where a beautifully set long table awaited us. Each course was perfectly paired with various Alto wines, culminating in a delightful dessert of almond macaroon, buttercream terrine, and autumn berries, paired with the Alto MPHS 2015 and the Alto Signature Red Blend 2016.
As we celebrated 100 years of winemaking, we reflected on Alto’s rich legacy. This milestone honors the dedication of the people behind the estate and the trust it has earned worldwide, enjoyed in fine dining establishments and at home alike.
“It’s impossible not to feel the weight of history at Alto,” winemaker Bertho van der Westhuizen remarked. “Over the past century, Alto has witnessed it all.”
Alto’s story is filled with local and international awards, but Bertho emphasizes that their true success lies in honoring the terroir. “Our mission has always been to do justice to the land.”
Although the estate’s title deed dates back to 1693, its winemaking heritage began with Manie Malan, who established the first vines and recognized the farm’s potential for crafting full-bodied red wines. His relationship with renowned Prof. Izak Perold led to the first vintage being shipped to London, marking the beginning of Alto’s legacy.
Malan was a pioneer who prioritized quality over quantity, experimenting with techniques like low-temperature fermentation. After four decades, the estate changed hands in 1959 to **Piet du Toit**, who introduced Alto’s first Cabernet Sauvignon and employed experts to enhance wine quality.
The turn of the century brought Schalk van der Westhuizen into leadership, elevating Alto’s reputation both locally and internationally. In 2010, he launched Alto’s flagship M.P.H.S wine, honoring the legacy of the winemakers before him.
Today, Bertho van der Westhuizen, the fifth winemaker in Alto’s history, continues this tradition with fresh innovation. He took over in 2015, during one of South Africa’s best vintages, and has since brought new energy to Alto’s wines.
Filled with delicious wine and delectable food, we returned to Cape Town, cherishing the memorable celebration.
We also had a chance to chat with Bertho. Here are some highlights:
What is your favorite varietal and why? “I love Cabernet Sauvignon. Stellenbosch offers the perfect terroir for this variety. Each year presents new challenges, requiring a hands-on approach.”
What is the most memorable moment in your winemaking career? “Taking over from my father was special. Seeing people appreciate our wines brings me immense satisfaction.”
What goals do you still wish to achieve in winemaking? “We will always strive to create the perfect wine, even though it may be impossible!”
Why do you love living in Africa? “The culture, humor, challenges, and vibrant life make this country truly fantastic!”
