Vondeling Wines has appointed acclaimed Swartland winemaker Callie Louw as consulting winemaker and viticultural adviser.
The appointment follows the departure of Emile van der Merwe, who spent 14 years at Vondeling and played an important role in developing the estate’s wines. The team thanked him for his dedication, contribution and valuable role in shaping the winery’s success.
Louw returns to familiar ground. From 2005 to 2007, he was Vondeling’s first winemaker, producing its earliest vintages, including the inaugural ‘Babiana’ releases. Since then, he has built a reputation for vineyard-led winemaking and a strong focus on expressing each site’s character.
“If the vineyards are right, the wine will be right. My job is to understand the farming and not get in the way of what the site is trying to say.”
Alongside his own project, ‘Sonkop’, Louw will advise on vineyard practices, site selection and the long-term wine direction of both Vondeling Wines and Vrymansfontein.
The appointment comes as Vrymansfontein, Vondeling’s hospitality destination and working almond farm on Paarl Mountain, prepares to release its first estate wines from vineyards planted on the property. The farm is home to SCAPE, The Shed and the Vondeling Tree Bar.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to healthy vineyards, restrained winemaking and wines that express the character of the Paardeberg.
