Recently Afribeing attended 100 years of winemaking celebrations at Alto Wine Estate. More than a milestone, the occasion recalled the proud story of a Stellenbosch champion and the people who have made it so. Few wineries ever attain, and retain, the level of trust Alto has.
It is enjoyed around the world whether at fine dining restaurants or at home with friends and now, more than ever, Alto enjoys a special place in the hearts of wine lovers across the spectrum.
Like a series of images flipped gradually from gritty black-and-white to the splendour of full colour, the vineyards of Alto have remained a feature of the landscape since 1919. The farm is spread across an elevated perch on a shoulder of the Helderberg Mountain, where the vine-bedecked valley drops away into the distance. Beyond, lies Table Mountain and the blue-grey peaks along the curve of False Bay.
The ocean is the source of the soothing afternoon breezes that slows ripening in the fruit and develops flavour. But climate is not everything. Generations of observation and know-how matched the best varieties with the aspect and soils. Today, few regions have produced as many iconic wines, which is why it is geographically famous as the Golden Triangle.
In celebration of this milestone Afribeing sat down with Alto winemaker Bertho Van der Westhuizen to find out more about the man behind the wines
Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Stellenbosch, a region renowned not only for its breathtaking landscapes but also as a cornerstone of South Africa’s winemaking heritage. Growing up here, surrounded by lush vineyards and the rich history of the wine industry, has profoundly shaped my identity and passion for winemaking.Aside from the fact that you come from a well-known, well-respected winemaking family, what other factors influenced your decision in becoming a winemaker?
I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have known my calling from a young age. Being immersed in a family with a legacy of winemaking provided a strong foundation, but it was more than just heritage that drew me to this profession. My early experiences in the vineyards, coupled with a deep appreciation for the art and science of winemaking, ignited a passion within me. I realised that winemaking is not just about tradition; it’s about creativity, innovation, and a deep connection to the land. Can you tell us an interesting fact about Alto Wine Estate (that is not widely known ?
One intriguing aspect of Alto Wine Estate’s history is that our early exports were done in barrels, which were transported to the harbor using horse-drawn carts. This method reflects the dedication and craftsmanship of our predecessors, who laid the groundwork for the estate’s reputation. It’s a reminder of the rich history and the evolution of winemaking practices that have shaped our journey. What is your favourite varietal and why?
My favourite varietal is Cabernet Sauvignon. Stellenbosch boasts some of the finest terroir for producing exceptional Cabernet, with its unique combination of climate, soil, and elevation. This varietal challenges me as a winemaker, as each vintage brings its own nuances and characteristics. The hands-on approach required to craft a high-quality Cabernet keeps me grounded and continually learning, making it a rewarding experience. What would you say is the most memorable moment in your winemaking career?
One of the most poignant moments in my career was when I officially took over the responsibilities from my father. It was not just a transition of roles but a passing of a legacy that filled me with pride and responsibility. Witnessing others appreciate and enjoy the fruits of our labor is an indescribable feeling that fuels my passion and dedication to this craft. Are there any goals you still wish to achieve with the farm or in winemaking, and if so, what are they?
The pursuit of perfection in winemaking is an ongoing journey, and while I understand that achieving the “perfect wine” is a lofty and perhaps unattainable goal, it is one that continually inspires us. We strive to innovate and elevate our craft, exploring new techniques and ideas to enhance our offerings while remaining true to our roots. Why do you love living in Africa?
Living in Africa is a vibrant experience filled with rich culture, incredible humor, and the myriad challenges that life presents. The sense of community and resilience found within our diverse society is something truly special. I cherish the opportunities to engage with different cultures, celebrate our shared humanity, and embrace the beauty of our fantastic country. It’s a place where life feels dynamic and full of possibility.
