Bernard and Sue Fontannaz, the custodians of Le Grand Jardin Villa in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch, have partnered with ARTROUTE, a specialized art and design tour company, to offer curated art experiences. These unique tours feature local galleries, private collections, and iconic art destinations in the region.
Le Grand Jardin Villa boasts six bedrooms and sits on five acres of enchanting gardens inspired by Alice in Wonderland. This magical space invites guests to explore art in a captivating environment.
Talita Swarts, the CEO of ARTROUTE, curates these exclusive art experiences, which also include the villa’s sister property, Le Grand Domaine Winery. Knowledgeable guides lead guests through the rich fine art community in Stellenbosch, providing unique access to local artists. This immersive experience deepens understanding of the vibrant local art scene.

The journey begins at Le Grand Jardin, where the gardens serve as an artistic canvas. Guests will encounter a diverse collection of artworks, from contemporary pieces to early 20th-century South African art. Each area of the Sir Herbert Baker-styled manor house is thoughtfully designed to create a unique atmosphere that blends art with the villa’s historic charm. This combination transforms the space into a living gallery, allowing guests to appreciate custom-designed wallpapers and artworks throughout their stay.
Sue Fontannaz emphasizes the joy of being surrounded by color and design, saying, “It reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously.” Andi Norton, Director of the Stellenbosch Triennale, adds that the whimsical setting at Le Grand Jardin contrasts with the often serious nature of the art world, showcasing art as a source of joy and curiosity.

Art Experiences at Le Grand Jardin Villa x ARTROUTE
1. Discover “The Art of the Postcard”
Guests embark on a creative adventure exploring art, nature, and Stellenbosch’s vibrant culture. They visit inspiring locations, including the villa, Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens, the Rupert Museum, Stephen Rautenbach’s studio, and the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. At each destination, guests collect artistic stamps to create personalized postcards as keepsakes of their visit. This family-friendly experience combines discovery, creativity, and local cuisine, including lunch at a nearby restaurant. For a full-day adventure, guests can choose art workshops or private wine tastings at Le Grand Domaine.
2. Paint (and Sip) Experience
Le Grand Jardin offers a unique Paint (and Sip) workshop, curated by fine art expert Ankia Lloyd of ARTROUTE. Set in the villa’s magical gardens, this workshop combines art, nature, and wine. Inspired by the stunning birdlife and landscapes, the theme is Garden Birds. Guests learn to use wine as a painting medium, creating rich colors and textures on fine art paper. Whether experienced or a beginner, this fun activity encourages creativity while enjoying handcrafted Le Grand Domaine wines.
3. Drops of God Wine Experience
Continuing its artistic offerings, Le Grand Jardin connects with Le Grand Domaine Winery to present the Drops of God wine tasting experience with winemaker Debbie Thompson. In a candlelit cellar, guests refine their senses with fifty-four scent vials, experiencing aromas ranging from quince to leather. The tasting includes a full range of Le Grand Domaine’s wines, celebrating craftsmanship and creating a sensory connection between visual beauty and fine wine.
These art experiences also serve as dynamic corporate retreats, allowing executives to collaborate outside the traditional office setting, enhancing strategy and performance.
In essence, Le Grand Jardin is more than a luxurious retreat, it is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between art and living. By immersing guests in a space where art is an integral component of the environment, it enriches Stellenbosch’s broader art narrative and offers a unique perspective that extends beyond the traditional gallery walls.
